What’s in my pack?

I’ve been waiting for a couple of final pieces of gear before I wrote about the gear I’m taking.

Some of you may be wondering what a backpacker carries inside their pack; well, here’s a list of what I’ll be carrying the entire trip — some modifications will be made to clothing and sleep system in the warmer months of course (higher temp rating under/top quilts, for example).

I’ll be wearing between eight and nine items of clothing whilst hiking, and depending on the temperature and inclement weather, a down insulation layer, and optional hard shell (waterproof jacket).

  1. Pack (Zpacks Blast)
  2. Pack liner (ZPacks dry bag)
  3. Underquilt (EnLIGHTened Equipment Revolt 20ºF)
  4. Top quilt (EnLIGHTened Equipment Revelation 20ºF)
  5. Tarp (ZPacks standard hammock tarp
  6. Hammock (Grand Trunk Super Ultralight Nano-7)
  7. Tarp stakes (six titanium shepherd hooked, one titanium v-stake (for digging cat holes))
  8. First aid kit inside small cuben fiber ditty bag
  9. Toilet paper in ZipLoc bag
  10. Sleeping pad (Inertia X-Frame) – in case I have to go to ground due to no hammock hanging options
  11. Headlamp (Tikka XP 2)
  12. Sunglasses (Julbo Race Sunglasses Zebra Antifog)
  13. Trekking poles (Gossamer Gear LT4S carbon fiber)
  14. * Cookset (Snowpeak Trek 700 titanium pot) – will do another post detailing cookset choices
  15. Water filtration (Sawyer Squeeze water filter wrapped inside an Evernew 1.5L bladder)
  16. Gatorade bottle – drinking water on the trail
  17. Pillow (Wilderness Logics down pillow)
  18. Multitool (Leatherman Style CS)
  19. Tripod (Joby GorillaPod)
  20. Camera (Nikon COOLPIX AW100 – water/shock/freeze proof)
  21. Kindle (Paperwhite)
  22. Journal (Moleskin classic red)
  23. Water storage (Platypus Water Tank 1 gallon) – for camp (bathing, cooking, cleaning, drinking)
  24. Down jacket (MontBell Ultralight)
  25. Long Johns (SmartWool microweight long johns) – for sleeping
  26. Bear bag (ZPacks dry bag)
  27. Neck/face insulation (Buff, vintage grey)
  28. Rain jacket (ZPacks waterproof breathable jacket)
  29. Wind shirt (North Face Verto jacket)
  30. AT Guidebook by David “Awol” Miller
  31. Base layers (SmartWool zippered – one for hiking, the thicker for sleeping)
  32. Running shorts (North Face Agility)
  33. Fleece (Rab Micro pull-on)
  34. Gloves (Marmot Windstopper convertible)
  35. Underpants (ExOfficio Give-N-Go boxer briefs) – for wearing when laundering everything else
  36. Ball cap (MontBell 3D mesh cap)
  37. Socks (SmartWool Hiking Ultralight)
  38. Beanie (SmartWool Reversible Beanie)

* I’ll post a separate entry to go through what’s in my cookset very soon.

  1. I’m actually not going to take the moleskin journal anymore – I’ll be writing on my iPhone and transferring those notes to the blog instead.

Far quicker, and I get to multi-use another item!
